FAQ's

How do I know what size lift chair is right for me?

Choosing the right size is important for comfort and safety. The key things to check are:

  • Seat height – Your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees at a right angle.
  • Seat depth – You should be able to sit back comfortably with a small gap (2–3 fingers) behind your knees.
  • Seat width – The chair should support you without feeling tight or leaving too much space at the sides.

Our team can help measure and guide you to the correct fit.

What do the different powered functions on Lift Chairs mean?

Lift-out rise and recline chairs can come with various powered movements:

  • Rise function – Lifts you gently to a near-standing position, reducing strain on your knees and hips.
  • Recline function – Lets you lean back for comfort, often with adjustable backrest angles.
  • Leg rest elevation – Raises your legs to improve comfort and circulation.
  • Dual motor chairs – Allow the backrest and leg rest to move independently for more customised positioning.

What’s the difference between single motor and dual motor lift chairs?

Single motor – The backrest and leg rest move together in one smooth action.

Dual motor – The backrest and leg rest can be adjusted separately, giving more flexibility in finding your perfect position.

Are lift chairs safe to use?

Yes. They are designed to support safe sitting and standing. Features like smooth motors, strong frames, and side pockets for remotes make them safe and convenient. Always keep the chair plugged in and ensure the remote is within easy reach.

How much space do I need for the lift chair?

Most recline chairs need space behind them to fully recline. Some models are “wall huggers” and can recline while sitting closer to the wall. Our team can show you the clearance requirements for each chair.

Do lift chairs need to be plugged in all the time?

Yes, most models work best when plugged into a standard power outlet. Some have battery backup, which allows the chair to return to an upright position in case of a power cut.

What fabrics and colours are available for lift chairs?

Chairs come in a variety of fabrics and leathers to suit your style and home décor. We can show you swatches and samples to help you choose.

Can I try a lift chair before buying?

Absolutely. At our Auckland retail site, Livewell, we encourage you to sit, recline, and try different models to see what feels right. Comfort and fit vary from person to person.

How do I look after my lift chair?

Keep the chair clean by vacuuming fabric or wiping leather with a damp cloth.

Avoid placing it in direct sunlight for long periods to prevent fading.

Have it serviced if you notice unusual noises or if the motor feels strained.

Is funding available for lift chairs?

In some cases, funding may be available through ACC, Disability Support Services, or grants. Our team can guide you through the options and connect you with an assessor if needed.

What is the Trendelenburg position and what is it used for on lift chairs?

The Trendelenburg position lowers the headrest completely while raising the legrest slightly above horizontal to help stretch the back and improve circulation. It may be recommended by medical professionals for people with low blood pressure or heart rate.
