Vicair Technology- What’s in There?

The unique Vicair technology is based on what Vicair call ‘SmartCells’. When people see SmartCells they often ask “What’s inside the triangles?”. The answer to that is really quite simple and short: “air”.

To be precise however, the SmartCells aren’t ‘triangles’: the shape is officially called a tetrahedron – not quite a triangle, also not really a pyramid but a combination of those two. So Vicair is all about packaging air in a unique way, in each of our Vicair cushions you will find hundreds of these small packages of air, hundreds of SmartCells.

FAQ's

How do I clean my Vicair cushion cover?

The cushion cover can be machine washed inside-out. See instructions on the label attached to the inside of the cover.

Can I wash the SmartCells that are used in Vicair cushions?

The SmartCells that are used in the Vicair O2 wheelchair cushions can be machine-washed (while they stay inside the cushion) without shortening the life span of the cells. This latest generation machine washable Vicair SmartCells is grey with an all-over black Vicair logo print. The cushions in our Vicair O2 range are fully machine-washable.

How do I clean my Vicair cushion?

Check the cushion label to make sure if your cushion is a Vicair O2 cushion or not!

Cleaning your Vicair O2 cushion is very easy!
Your Vicair O2 cushion can be machine washed at 60°C using an anti-crease cycle and mild detergent. You do not need to remove the SmartCells before putting the cushion into the washing machine. Make sure the topside of the cushion is not placed against the glass of the washer door. Do not load the machine with more than half of its maximum load weight. Spin speed should be reduced. When using a machine with agitator, make sure that the cushion can move freely within the drum. Do not use any chlorine bleach and do not dry clean. Do not tumble dry your Vicair O2 cushion but let it air dry (5-6 hours). You can use the sling to hang dry your Vicair O2 cushion. Please note: when washing the Vicair Active O2, first remove the Foam inlay. The Foam inlay cannot be machine washed.

Your cushion is from the – now discontinued – Vicair classic range (➡ your cushion label mentions “Academy” and/or does not mention “O2” in the article name):
• Treat light stains by wiping the inner cushion with a damp cloth, using a mild detergent.
• Difficult spots or stains can be cleaned by first saturating the spot and then using a soft brush to loosen the dirt, or by machine washing the emptied inner cover at 60°.
• If it is necessary to remove the SmartCells™ for cleaning, note the number of cells in each compartment.

Are Vicair Cushions Waterproof

Vicair cushions are not fully waterproof in the way a sealed waterproof product would be. However;

  • The SmartCells and cushion structure are breathable and regulate moisture, helping with comfort and micro-climate control. They’re designed to manage humidity, temperature and everyday moisture from sweat or light dampness.
  • The cushion (including SmartCells) and cover are fully machine washable, which means you can wash them if they become soiled. They tolerate water during normal cleaning without harming performance.
  • Covers (with certain options such as fluid-resistant or Incotec covers) offer some resistance to fluids and make cleaning easier, but that’s not the same as being completely waterproof.

In practical terms:
✔ They handle moisture, cleaning and wash-down well.
✘ They’re not sealed waterproof products you could, for example, fully submerge for extended periods without water entering the cushion.

Are Vicair cushions suitable for people at risk of pressure injuries?

Yes, with the exception of the Vicair Liberty cushions (not listed on our website), each model has different compartments that allow you to add or remove SmartCells to fine-tune support, stability, and pressure distribution to suit the users body and seating needs.

Can I adjust the Vicair cushion for my personal comfort or posture?

Yes. The cushions provide excellent pressure redistribution and immersion, making them suitable for users who require enhanced skin protection. Clinical guidelines should always be followed when selecting pressure care equipment.

Do Vicair cushions require inflation?

No. The cushions are filled with SmartCells, not air. They maintain their performance without the need for pumping or checking air levels, making them very low-maintenance.

What makes Vicair cushions different from other wheelchair cushions?

Vicair cushions use hundreds of soft SmartCells that move and adapt to your body shape. This helps provide comfortable pressure redistribution, stability, and skin protection without the need for regular air-pumping or complex adjustments.

Where can I find the serial number on a Vicair cushion?

Are Vicair cushions available in specially custom-made sizes?

Yes, we can provide custom sizes. Please email customercare@alliedmedical.co.nz or chat to your Technical Product Specialist if you are an Assessor or Clinician.

What is the lifespan of a Vicair cover?

We advise replacing the cover every year.

What is the lifespan of a Vicair cushion?

The average lifespan of a Vicair cushion is three to five years, however, this depends on usage.
If you use a Vicair cover and replace it every year, it will benefit the lifespan of the Vicair cushion.

What factors should I consider when selecting the thickness for a Vicair cushion?

Why to select a 9 or 10 cm thick cushion model:

  • It is always a better and safer choice.
  • Provides better immersion and envelopment of the body
  • Ideal in the presence of asymmetry.
  • More options for making adjustments. You can both add and remove SmartCells.

Why to select a 6 cm thick cushion model:

  • When functionality is at stake.
  • When the user has a low risk of developing pressure injuries.
  • Can be used with active users with a custom fit wheelchair without the ability to adjust the height of the footplates, backrest, etc.
  • Fewer cushion adjustment options. You can never remove SmartCells, only add them.
  • Can be used in combination with a sling seat. The sling seat allows for better tracking of body contours.

What is the maximum weight capacity for a Vicair cushion?

The label of each product indicates the maximum user weight.

In general, there is a maximum weight of 250 kg.

There are exceptions for:
Vicair Liberty cushions: maximum user weight 150 kg
Vicair Active O2: maximum user weight 200 kg
Vicair AllRounder O2: maximum user weight 100 kg
Vicair XXtra: maximum user weight 500 kg
