It sounds like the 4 inch version may have worked better in terms of height but the seat is still the same in terms of the bulk you mention due to the sturdy and robust design. The aperture is similar across our range of raised seats and is set to work with all standard toilet seats with both round and over openings. One point to check is to ensure the seat is installed with the actual toilet seat up and not on top of the toilet seat.
